Two hours later, Emerson Perkins arrived at the emergency room of NYU Medical Center.
Flying through the automatic doors, âJosie, where is she?â he unceremoniously asked as soon as he spotted her.
âEmerson, thank you for coming,â Josie responded, the relief evident in her tone.
She had tried to contact her husband, Carl, but with his job as a technician for Con Ed, he very often had to work under the streets of New York. When she got no response from him, and still hadnât heard from him after ninety minutes had passed, Josie assumed that was the case, especially since she had put in the code 911.
âWhat happened, Josie? Where is she?â Emerson insistently inquired a second time.
âSheâs with the doctors. Theyâre running all kinds of tests, trying to find out why she passed out.â
Biting his bottom lip to quell his worry, his face wore confusion and even more concern than when he first arrived.
âShe passed out? Where?â
âWe went to see Chicago. I was sitting right next to her,â Josie explained as tears formed in the corners of her eyes. âI didnât even know anything was wrong. Just before the intermission, she basically collapsed onto my shoulder. When I tried to wake her, she wouldnât move.â Crying openly now, Josie continued, âI didnât even know what was wrong.â
Pulling her into his arms, Emerson tried to comfort her. âJosie, itâs okay. You were there with her. Thatâs the important thing. You were there.â
âIâm scared, Emerson,â she cried against his chest.
âWhy?â
âSheâs been having these pains for a while now. She keeps saying theyâre nothing big, but theyâve been coming too frequently, probably more frequently than sheâs even telling me.â
âHas she seen anyone about them?â he asked.
âNo. She kept saying, âIâll be alright.ââ Josie moved slowly out of his embrace.
Emerson swore under his breath. Still the same stubborn girl heâd loved.
âHave you spoken to her mother?â
âNo, I didnât want to call her until I knew something definitive. I donât want to get her all upset over nothing.â
âThank you for calling me, Josie.â
Moving back to the seat she was occupying when he arrived, Josie told him, âDespite everything you guys have been through, Iâve always known that you care about her.â
âI do and Iâm glad you understand that. I wish she did.â
âWell, you have to look at it from her point of view. She got the short end of the stick when you guys broke up. You wanted something she would never be able to give you and that, by itself, was painful for her.â
Emerson sighed as he took the vacant seat next to her. âI know I should have handled that better than I did. Hindsight is twenty-twenty. She probably wonât be too happy to see me when theyâre through with her, but I want her to know that Iâm here for her; that Iâll always be here for her when she needs me.â
Reaching over to take his hand, Josie simply responded, âI knew you would.â
âMrs. Smith,â one of the attending physicians suddenly called out.
âYes, Iâm Mrs.
